Pope's Chapel was established in 1861 as Pope’s Chapel Christian Church. Ms.Mary Pope donated the land and several people in the community donated the building supplies to build the church.
Under the direction of Rev. W.H. Thomas a new church was built. The church officers were Deacon George Crudup, Deacon Tom Crudup, Deacon Joseph Crudup, Deacon Kelly Perry, Deacon Newton Yarbrough, Deacon Henry Crews, Deacon Gordon Mangrum, Deacon Melvin Yarbrough, Deacon Louis Yarbrough and others.
Pastors that followed Rev. Thomas were: Rev. Ernest Coker, Rev. John Little and Rev. W.F. Lee. After approximately 20 years of service, God called Rev. Lee home and Rev. John Henry Jones was sent Pope’s way.
The second Pope’s Chapel building was about to cave in and prospects for a new church was just a little more than a vision and a dream. However, some of the same officers who helped build the first church still held onto that same faith and determination.
The new church was only a few cinder blocks above ground when Rev. Jones became pastor. Under his leadership and his “Yes, We Can” attitude, hard work and a whole lot of faith, things soon began to take shape.
The new church was completed in 1979 with new furnishings, lighting and inside rest rooms. Telephones and central air and heating were installed as well.
Under Rev. Jones leadership, in addition to the senior choir, three more choirs were formed. There were two associate ministers, nine deacons and six trustees. Over the years, through God’s blessings, the church purchased a bus and two church vans. A fellowship hall was added and beautiful stained windows were added through family donations. A wheelchair ramp was built and the entire church was bricked.
On March 28, 1999, after 21 years of dedicated service, Rev. Jones resigned as pastor. The church was without a pastor for an extended period of time. Associate Minister, Evangelist Mattie Crudup, played a major role in pastoral leadership, preaching and teaching until a new pastor was called.Over the next 10 years, Pope’s had the following pastors: Rev. Eddie Harper, Rev. Kevin Langley and Rev. Jerome Henry.
At the end of 2008, Pope's Chapel again faced the task of finding new pastoral leadership. Guided by the Holy Spirit, a Pastor Search Committee was formed and the journey began.
After over a year of searching, praying and allowing God to guide our footsteps, Pope's Chapel elected a new pastor on May 2, 2010. Rev. Leroy Dukes accepted the pastor role and began his pastoral leadership on June 6, 2010. |
